Belgradeis the capital and the largest city in Serbia. One of the oldest cities in Europe. First settlements on the territory of Belgrade date from prehistoric Vinča, 4.800 years BC. Belgrade was founded by Celts in the 3. century BC, before it became Roman settlement Singidunum. Slavic name „Beligrad” was first noted in the year 878. Belgrade has been the capital of Serbia since the year 1405 and it was the capital of many southern Slavic countries since 1918. till 2003., as well as the capital of Serbia and Montenegro from the year 2003.till2006.

The city lies at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers where the Pannonian Plane meets the Balkans. It is located in the centre of the most important water way in the Europe: North Sea – Atlantic – Black Sea, and that’s why it is called „the Balkan Gate” and „the door of middle Europe”. Despite the fact that it takes up only 3,6% of the Republic of Serbia territory, 21% of the total population of Serbia lives in it. Round 1,700,000 people live in Belgrade which makes it the largest city at the territory of ex Yugoslavia regarding the number of inhabitants and the third in the South East Europe after Istambul and Athens. Belgrade is the city of young people, more than 40% of Belgrade inhabitants are between 15 and 44 years old, thanks to which Belgrade’s night life is known to be the best in Europe.

Belgradeis also the economic centre of Serbia and the centre of Serbian culture, education and science.

Belgradesurroundings consists of two different natural environments: the Pannonian Plane in the North and Šumadija in the south. Mountains Kosmaj (628 m) and Avala (511 m) are also part of Belgrade surroundings. Length of Belgrade river banks is 200 km, including 16 river islands the biggest of which are Ada Ciganlija and Great War  Island.
